Overview
Upper Mustang was closed to outsiders until 1992, and it still feels like a place apart. The landscape is closer to the Tibetan plateau than to the rest of Nepal — canyon walls striped in ochre and rust, chortens marking the trail, and the walled city of Lo Manthang holding thousand-year-old monasteries. Few places in the Himalaya feel this cinematic, or this quiet.
